STREET DANCE SYLLABUS

Like it says, we’re a syllabus. The one that focuses on street styles of dance.

At Street Dance Syllabus, our vision is to provide the right knowledge and guidance for mastering street dance styles. We are dedicated to teaching not only the techniques but also the culture and history behind the dance, empowering dancers to grow, express themselves, and reach their full potential. Our goal is to create an inclusive, supportive community where creativity and individuality thrive.

OUR STORY

Our Story: The Birth of the Street Dance Syllabus

We were all inspired to create the Street Dance Syllabus because of our diverse backgrounds and experiences in the dance industry. Each of us has seen the challenges that dancers face, from the disconnect between the street dance community and the traditional dance studio world to the misrepresentation of hip-hop culture in mainstream media. We all recognized different problems and wanted to find a way to address them.

Through brainstorming, discussion, and a shared vision, we came together to create a solution: the Street Dance Syllabus. We aim to bridge the gap between the street dance community and dance studios, creating a clear path for dancers to learn authentic street dance techniques. Too often, the hip-hop you see in the media today doesn’t reflect the true essence of the culture—it’s missing the foundation, the history, and the techniques that make it unique.

Our goal is to properly educate people on what street dance really is. We’re starting with hip-hop, breaking, and krump, and we plan to expand further. We want to ensure that the future of street dance is grounded in authenticity, respect for its roots, and an understanding of its cultural significance.

Through the Street Dance Syllabus, we hope to not only preserve the integrity of hip-hop but to help both dancers and instructors develop a deeper connection with the true art form of street dance.

The Collective

  • Vinson Tran

Director of Breaking & Artist Relations

As an independent dancer from Saskatchewan, movement has always been my voice for self-expression. Growing up as the eldest son of Vietnamese immigrants in Regina, I navigated the push and pull between my family’s desire for stability and my own artistic dreams. Despite facing discrimination and the challenges of being a minority in a small town, I found strength in dance, using it to heal, grow, and develop resilience.

Over the past 13 years, dance has become my anchor—teaching me discipline, humility, and self-love. This journey has not only fueled my creativity but has also inspired me to share the transformative power of movement with others, especially those facing struggles like I once did. My mission is simple: to inspire, uplift, and empower dancers to find their true voice and make a lasting impact through the art of dance.
